Microtubules play a crucial role in maintaining the structure of the cell by providing mechanical support and shape. Lastly, microtubules are not involved in energy production; that function is primarily carried out by mitochondria in the form of ATP synthesis. Thus, maintaining cellular structure is the primary and most essential role of microtubules.
